Hands up who counts winter as their favourite season. Ah, yes, thought there’d be a few of you.
What’s with Melbourne’s deep attachment to winter? It defies logic and yet there it is, every year when winter comes a-calling, we’re throwing our doors open and letting that cool to mild westerly in. And trying to give it a little cuddle on its way past.

Maybe it’s because our city looks so beautiful in winter: a crisp, steely sky above broad tree branches, majestic buildings and shiny wet footpaths. Those foggy mornings on the tram give us a feeling of togetherness – and a chance to write love messages to other passengers in the steamy windows. That cutie sitting opposite you might take up your offer, you never know.
Maybe it’s our own good looks that make Melbourne winters so attractive. Making cosy look cool is a skill we’ve all honed through many winters. Buying a new coat in Melbourne is akin to buying a toasty best friend… And of course, scarves, gloves and hats – whether handmade, designer, op-shopped – we’re into them all. And once we’re rugged up, nothing stops us.
But really, it’s probably just because there’s so much fantastic stuff happening in Melbourne during winter.
Melbourne is not a city that shuts down when the temperature drops. No, instead we get busier, turning on the music, art, film, theatre, sport and food with festivals, major events and more.
Welcome, winter, welcome! Please, come in and show us what you’ve got!
