Five must-visit waterfront bars

In Melbourne, we’re lucky enough to have many places to quench our thirst and fill our bellies while enjoying a waterfront view.  Here are five waterfront bars to visit this summer and beyond.

Ponyfish Island

Surrounded by water on all fronts, Ponyfish Island is a unique sanctuary for those wanting a break from the bustling city. Found under the Southbank Pedestrian Bridge this island getaway offers delicious food and fancy cocktails. All to be imbued with water lapping just beneath your feet.

Arbory Bar & Eatery

Comfort food and craft beers are in abundance at this venue that was once a train platform that was around way back in the days of steam trains. Open from early in the morning to late at night. Arbory is perfect for breakfast post morning run and the spot to enjoy a bevvy pre-show at Melbourne Arts Centre.

The Wharf Hotel

Despite boasting a wine list that features wines from 12 of Australia’s most famous wine producers, pretension is not welcome at this pub. Wharf Hotel feels like a local and offers the bonus of an extensive seasonal menu which presents Victorian fare to hungry visitors and a pretty special view.

Riverland Bar

In 1889, vaults were built to assist in the construction of the ‘new’ Princes Bridge. In 2006, after being used for many things including storage, Riverland Bar, opened its doors, using the vaults as their home. It offers a beer garden, alongside a menu boasting some of the fanciest sausages ever imagined. Riverland is a little slice of relaxation in the heart of the city.

The view looking out from Riverland is just as spectacular

The General Assembly

Few venues can boast the same obsessiveness when it comes to craft beer as The General Assembly can. The Assembly is the only location (besides the brewery itself) that offers the full Matilda Bay craft beer range. They also give you the opportunity to sample unpasteurised Carlton Draught from Copper Duo Tanks. This is the perfect place to take the person in your life who fancies themselves a Cicerone (A Cicerone is like a wine Sommelier, however, their expertise is with beer). To add to the general joy of this assembly, it also offers views of Melbourne’s harbour.
