A guide to late-night dining

Some of Melbourne’s restaurants and bars are best visited well after dark. Whether you’re in need of sustenance after a show, or reliving your youth, here a few of our finest late-night venues.

Niew Amsterdam is open until 3am every night

Kirk’s

The third venue to arrive at the Kirk corner on Hardware Lane, Kirk’s is a pub and diner next door to the original Kirk’s Wine Bar. Unlike its sibling and the neighbouring French Saloon, Kirk’s is beer-focused and bar snacks are the star. There is also a rotating hot meal each day, to pair with your favourite frothie.

French Saloon

Open until 2am, Parisian-style, white-clothed tables and pale timber fills this clean, lofty space. Located above Kirk’s Wine Bar, tuck yourself in a corner under the moonlight, or snag one of French Saloon‘s coveted balcony tables. French and French-style wine pairs perfectly with nibbles, including a house made charcuterie plate and natural oysters. Open Monday to Friday only.

Nieuw Amsterdam

A well-known stamping ground for late-night workers, shift workers and night-owls alike, the kitchen at Nieuw Amsterdam closes at 3am nightly. Their second late-night ‘Harlem Supper Club’ kicks off on Saturday 26 March at the ripe old time of 1:30am. A different chef will spearhead each Supper Club event, showcasing three courses for $70.

Belleville

You know you’ve hit the jackpot when there’s a dedicated ‘up late’ menu at the table. Known for serving some of the best roast chicken in Melbourne, Belleville‘s version is glazed with sticky miso butter or soldier boy spice. Chow through karaage popcorn chicken served with tonkatsu aioli, chicken liver parfait with Japanese onion jam and their famous poutine until 1am.

Supper Club

The Melbourne Supper Club is a late-night drinking and dining institution. Leather couches and wood panelling create an air of old-world sophistication until the wee hours of the morning. It’s open daily until 4am, and 6am on Friday and Saturday.

Loch & Key

A late-night gem hidden above Melbourne’s oldest pub, Lock & Key presents a speak-easy vibe, with friendly and knowledgable bar staff. Late night cravings are sorted with snacks such as sliders and nachos served into the early morn. Open Wednesday and Thursday until 3am, Friday and Saturday until 5am, and Sunday until 1am.
