Your Melbourne guide to outdoor cinemas

From rooftops to gardens, to car parks to universities, this summer there is an outdoor cinema to satisfy anyone’s taste.

Backlot Rooftop Drive-In

Backlot Studios have opened one of Melbourne’s most unique outdoor rooftop cinemas – Backlot Rooftop Drive-In. Experience 360° panoramic views of the city skyline as you enjoy blockbuster films. Walk-up patrons are also invited to join in on all the film buff-action in a small deck area with seats.

Moonlight Cinema

Located in the Royal Botanic Gardens throughout summer, BYO picnic rug or cushion to this ever-popular outdoor event. A limited number of Bean Beds (yep beds) are also available for hire and are allocated on a first-in-first-served basis. Friendly four-legged guests are welcome to join, while a licensed bar and on-site venue will keep every human and furry pal happy.

Rooftop Cinema

One of Melbourne’s first rooftop cinemas and arguably the most famous, Rooftop Cinema has all you need for an evening of cinematic bliss. Warm blankets are available for hire for Melbourne’s occasionally not so balmy summer nights, and comfy deck chairs give the rooftop a unique feel. Pop in for a drink pre-screening or grab dinner at fellow Curtin House offerings Mesa Verde or Cookie.

Shimmerlands

New kid on the block, Shimmerlands has taken over The University of Melbourne campus during university holidays. From the team that brought you Shadow Electric, the curated cinema program features a range of cult classics, independent Australian films and documentaries; alongside a program of live music and foodie options.
