More than Italian on Lygon Street

Dig a little deeper and discover a world of culinary flavours in Carlton’s famous eat street. Here’s five tasty options.

Heartattack and Vine

Modelled after a classic European bistro, Heartattack and Vine prides itself on its boutique all-day menu. Breakfast options include their prosciutto roll (a crowd favourite) served with tomato and basil on toasted ciabatta. Lunch rolls pop with flavour, while dinner is a simple affair featuring seasonal salads and a rotating selection of Venetian-style bar food.

Nora

Expect the unexpected at Thai-inspired fine dining restaurant, Nora. Seating just 20 patrons, the restaurant serves up a 10 to 12-course degustation which pushes the boundaries of flavour, ingredients and creativity. Dish names include the ‘Bangkok Street caviar’, ‘Thai cupcake wanting to become western’ and the ‘Too many Italians and only one Asian’ – the last perhaps a nod to their Lygon Street location.

Hwatu

Undeterred from its pasta-brandishing, pizza-wielding neighbours, Hwatu has launched near the Grattan Street end of Lygon Street. Walking in reveals a no-frills, classic Korean-styled barbeque joint, with deep timber walls and black leather seats. Korean fried chicken and their signature barbeque dominates tables, but don’t be afraid to venture further with kimchi stews and beef bulgogi hotpots.

Shukufuku

Specialising in Japanese takeaway in a chic, modern space, Shukufuku delivers menu favourites at a reasonable price. A range of udon and do-it-yourself bento boxes are available through the night. Mix and match traditional options like chicken katsu curry or chicken teriyaki, with tasty sides such as onsen eggs, edamame and miso soup.

Bickle at John Curtin

A Caribbean canteen tucked into The John Curtin Hotel, Bickle is a must whether you’re a little bit peckish or hangry for a proper Jamaican meal. Jerk chicken burgers, lobster cheesy mac and sweet potato crisps are just a few of the finger-licking options. Larger plates include curry goat and coconut rundown crab.
