Little Mule now open!
Monday 27 September 2010, 5:23 PM
By The Team | Posted in PlacesWhen you’re on to a good thing, why change, right? There’s such comfort in the familiar. Comfortable coffee-sippers who frequent the tiny window-café of Switchboard should throw caution to the wind and wander a few city blocks to try out new café-kid on the Somerset Place block, Little Mule & Co.

Why? Well because the new isn’t completely new. Aside from the excellent coffee you’ve come to expect in this town, you’ll find a familiar face behind the coffee machine – the lovely Hamish from Switchboard who will make you feel right at home.
Switchboard regulars aren’t the only ones who are going to love this new laneway mixed-business. People who prefer two-wheeled transportation who make their way to Little Mule will also be rewarded. For Little Mule is not just a café, it is also a brand of bike. And a sleek, no fuss, uber-cool bike at that.
Little Mule the café – a light and bright space with heavy wooden tables and benches – is also Little Mule the shop. You can check out (and maybe even buy) their unique brand of two-wheeled beauties all while downing a cup of genuinely good coffee. How’s that for multi-tasking?
With water served in jam jars and a simple breakfast and lunch menu, Little Mule will attract anyone who finds themself wandering the Hardware Lane precinct in need for a quiet corner to sit for a moment surrounded by good-looking bikes.
Little Mule is now open weekdays from 7am – 4pm and Saturdays from 9am – 3.30pm.Switchboard can be found on the Ground Floor of the Manchester Unity Building, 220 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Love noodles and cheap dates

In South Korea they have three Valentines Days. One for women to give chocolate to men, one for men to give chocolate to women, and one for all the people who didn’t get any chocolate to go and eat black noodles and mourn their single life.
Here in Melbourne, there’s so much to do in the week surrounding V-day there’s no need for anyone to be eating the black noodles. Whether you’re loved up or romancing platonically, have fun doing any of the following date activities for free or not much more.
Hire yourself and your special friend a pair of classy wheels from our very own Matt Hurst. Everything’s rose-coloured and shiny when pedalling atop a classic racer or vintage ladies’ bike.
The MSO are holding free concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl again this summer. The V-week offering is a repertoire of Romantic Favourites on 17 February. Perfect for picnics and hand-holding.
Everybody knows the way to the heart is through the Synesso coffee machine. After a free cupping class at Seven Seeds you’ll also know your chocolate malts from your woody citrus blends.
Catch the Jenny Holzer exhibition before it closes for some thought-provoking art-gazing. There’s also a free public artist’s talk on 19 February.
The Rooftop Cinema is screening the ultimate girl meets boy meets girl’s pimp love story on Valentines Day proper: Tarantino’s True Romance. Hire a blanket and get snuggly.
